Dragonflies are insects
in the order of Odonata, they have
- 6 legs,
- 2 pairs of transparent wings
- 2 compound eyes.
- An elongated body
Although dragonflies
have six legs they can not walk well on them, they are one of the
fastest flying insects in the world.
Their hindwings are
broader than their forewings. Most dragonflies rest with their wings
away from and perpendicular to their bodies.
Dragonflies are
carnivorous, they are important predators, they
eat, files, mosquitoes,
bees, wasps, and other small insects. They will occasionally eat
butterflies and sometimes even smaller dragonflies.
Female dragonflies lay
their eggs in water, often on a water plant, some of the females will
even go completely under water when they lay their eggs in order to
get the best spot.
The eggs then hatch into
nymphs. Most of the dragonflies life is spent as a nymph.
